Aquileia Walks Festival 2026: slow travel, walks and cultural routes

From 17 to 19 April 2026, Aquileia becomes a meeting point for advocates and newcomers to slow travel. The festival highlights walking as a way to explore places, connect with heritage and engage communities within this important UNESCO site.

What to expect

The three-day event combines public talks, expert panels and hands-on activities. Highlights include:

  • Panels and discussions: policies for walking routes, accessibility, inclusive design and territorial development;
  • Stories and testimonies: accounts from long-distance walkers and exchanges on European itineraries;
  • Practical experiences: guided walks, archaeological strolls, forest bathing and workshops for adults and children.

Why Aquileia

As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Aquileia preserves a rich archaeological and cultural legacy: the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta with its large early-Christian mosaics, the remains of the Roman river port and ancient road networks. These features make the festival's walks unique opportunities to read the landscape through history.

Routes and connections

The festival highlights Aquileia's role as a hub for several historic and spiritual routes, such as:

  • Romea Strata (linking the Baltic to Rome);
  • Cammino Celeste (from Barbana to Monte Lussari);
  • Iter Goritiense (crossing toward Sveta Gora);
  • Historic roads like Via Postumia and Via Flavia and traditional pilgrimage paths.

Core programme

The opening session takes place on Friday 17 April 2026 at Palazzo Brunner-Segrè, focusing on cultural policies and trail management. During the weekend, activities will be staged across the city and nearby sites: institutional venues, archaeological areas, wineries, cafés and parks will host meetings and experiential routes.

On-the-ground experiences

  • Themed walks along local trails;
  • Archaeological walks tracing Aquileia's waterways;
  • Forest bathing sessions and wellbeing workshops linked to walking;
  • Family-friendly activities introducing children to the value of walking and heritage.

Participation and bookings

All events are free but require advance booking until places are filled. Bookings open on 7 April 2026 at 10:00 via Eventbrite. The shared walk "Una tappa insieme" on 19 April 2026 is coordinated through the official Cammini d'Italia website.

Practical information

  • Location: Aquileia (UD), Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy;
  • Dates: 17 - 19 April 2026;
  • Admission: free with reservation;
