Amendolara seeks €2.7M to secure historic town centre

Amendolara requests €2.7M for protection of the historic village

The Municipality of Amendolara has submitted a new funding application under Civil Protection procedures to strengthen and protect the historic centre, concentrating on the south and south-west slopes along via Cavour and piazza Garibaldi.

The area is affected by calanchi erosion and classified as high hydrogeological risk: current conditions can lead to underground voids and threaten building stability. The proposed plan, totalling approximately €2,700,000, targets structural measures and risk mitigation works.

Planned measures

  • Deep consolidation using micropile retaining walls to stabilise slopes and limit ground movement.
  • Advanced geophysical surveys to map subsurface conditions and focus interventions where most needed.
  • Securing and renewing essential underground services to ensure functionality and safety beneath the historic streets.
  • Stormwater management to counteract erosion and improve local drainage.
  • Area refurbishment with natural stone paving to restore the village’s appearance and reduce surface erosion.

Goals and administrative path

The initiative aims to lower residual risk in one of the most vulnerable parts of the historic centre, protect dwellings and preserve local identity. The municipal administration will follow the procedure with Civil Protection and the Calabria Region to secure funds and start works as soon as financing is available.

For residents: the plan includes targeted construction phases; the municipality will provide advance notice on operational stages and any changes to traffic arrangements.
