Herculaneum: Mother's Day Inclusive Tours at the Archaeological Park

For Mother's Day the Herculaneum Archaeological Park is dedicating a morning to families and young visitors with neurodevelopmental disorders, with special attention to autism. The aim is to provide a safe, accessible and engaging cultural experience supported by trained staff and heritage operators.

How the tours are organized

Tours are designed to encourage calm participation: the route is shorter, with trained support personnel and limited group sizes to ensure personalized assistance.

• Time: 09:00–14:00 (five morning time slots)
• Tour length: about 1 hour 30 minutes
• Groups: up to 25 participants per slot
• Price: free with the standard site admission ticket (reductions and exemptions apply according to regulations)
• Booking: mandatory
• Audience: families, primary and lower secondary schools, anyone seeking an accessible visit

Activities and tools for neurodiversity

To boost engagement the Park offers an interactive digital guide called "Avventura a Ercolano", designed for education and neurodiverse needs. Highlights include:

• augmented reality and interactive beacons along the route;
• educational games such as mosaic reassembly and hands-on activities in designated areas;
• virtual restoration experiences and virtual coin collection;
• tablets provided by the Park or the option to download the app on iPad (see ercolano.cultura.gov.it/accessibilita/ for info).

Participation and bookings

Booking is required. The initiative is part of the "Cultura senza barriere" (Culture Without Barriers) project that works to make cultural sites more welcoming and usable for all families.
