The Italian Ministry of Culture has awarded the exhibition "From Picasso to Van Gogh: Stories of Painting from Abstraction to Impressionism" with the status of significant cultural interest. The show is on view at the Museo Civico di Santa Caterina in Treviso and is curated by Marco Goldin.
The display offers a non-chronological route that links different pictorial languages and traditions: from mid-20th-century American abstraction up to the masters of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. More than sixty works are exhibited, many of them arriving in Italy for the first time, on loan from the Toledo Museum of Art (USA).
The exhibition sets up surprising comparisons between artists and movements. Featured names include Richard Diebenkorn, Mondrian, Albers, Morandi, Braque, Matisse, Bonnard, De Chirico, Modigliani, Picasso, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Gauguin, Cézanne and Van Gogh. The final section, focused on Impressionist and Post-Impressionist landscapes, includes a notable Van Gogh painted in the last week of his life, presented as a highlight of the itinerary.
Near the exhibition's closing a special event is planned: a theatrical preview conceived by the show's art historian, centered on Monet; the production will tour Italy from October. The exhibition is a valuable chance to explore the artistic developments between the 19th and 20th centuries.
Visitor tip: the show has drawn large audiences; book ahead and verify any last-minute changes to schedules.
