One million dollars for ancient Rome: where the money goes

21 April 2026 – A donation of $1,000,000 has been announced to support the archaeological heritage of Rome. The funding is reported to be directed not into large bureaucratic pools but straight to professionals and operational bodies working on site.

This contribution adds to earlier grants, bringing the total pledged by the benefactor to about $4 million in less than two years. The initiative aims to sustain the everyday work of those who study, conserve and promote the Capital’s archaeological sites.

Types of projects financed

  • Archaeological excavations: support for campaigns that uncover new finds and stratigraphy;
  • Conservation and restoration: interventions on monuments and artifacts at risk of decay;
  • Digital documentation: 3D scans, photogrammetry and mapping to build accessible and secure archives;
  • Specialist research: archival work, stratigraphic analyses and interdisciplinary studies by universities and research centres.

Practical impact for archaeological sites

Allocating resources directly to archaeologists, conservators, research groups and local institutions can speed up operational projects and pilot initiatives: from excavation seasons to conservation work and the digital preservation of collections and sites. This approach also encourages collaboration with universities and specialized laboratories active in the field.

What remains unclear and how to follow developments

Details about the specific projects or final recipients of this tranche have not been disclosed. For updates on allocations and concrete projects, follow announcements from archaeological superintendencies, involved universities and research centers working in Rome.

Practical note: last October there was an earlier grant of about one million euros directed to a programme named Expandere Coscientiae Lumen, also aimed at supporting the archaeological sites of the Capital.
