The 0-6 Centers in Barberino Tavarnelle are emerging as a reference model for early childhood education: physically connected nursery and preschool buildings, targeted teacher training and an approach focused on simplicity and direct contact with the environment.
Pedagogia povera (a ‘‘poor pedagogy’’ approach) underpins the activities: simple practices, hands-on work, slow rhythms and attention to emotions, all aimed at fostering children’s development through concrete experience and relationships. The programme, started experimentally and refined over time, engages schools, the municipality and families.

Municipal leaders say the experience shows how spatial design and pedagogical choices can work together to promote inclusion, wellbeing and learning. The 0-6 Centres are now cited as good practice nationally and may inspire other communities rethinking early childhood education.
