On 13 April 2026 in Verona, during Vinitaly, stakeholders relaunched the proposal to recognize wine culture as an element of UNESCO heritage. Led by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) together with institutional delegations and industry representatives, the initiative emphasizes wine as a cultural landscape, a set of traditional techniques and a marker of local identity.
Visitors to UNESCO sites linked to viticulture may see more structured offers, such as guided vineyard tours and tastings focused on local traditions. Operators can develop cultural-enotourism packages, collaborate with local authorities and adopt transparent sustainability standards.
The path to UNESCO recognition involves technical and administrative steps, including preparation of nomination dossiers and international assessments. To stay informed, monitor official communications from the OIV and relevant institutional bodies, as well as regional and national calls for proposals and funding.
If approved, the recognition could bring tangible benefits to Italy's UNESCO sites where viticulture shapes landscape and cultural identity. Engaging with the process and local initiatives can help protect and sustainably promote these territories.
