Craco: the ghost village of Basilicata

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 19:26

The village of Craco is one of the most mysterious in Italy, often nicknamed the “ghost village” due to its abandonment following landslides and ground subsidence.

Despite this, Craco has become one of the most fascinating villages in Basilicata and is recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

What to see in Craco

The defining features of this village are its medieval ruins. Following the narrow alleys, one reaches the Norman Castle, dating back to the 11th century, from which it is possible to admire the Lucanian calanchi (clay ravines).

Other highlights include the Mother Church of San Nicola, the clock tower, and the old prisons, which can only be visited through guided tours.

It is precisely here that some scenes of world-famous films were shot, such as The Passion of the Christ by Mel Gibson.

Events, culture and traditions

The state of abandonment has not dampened the resilient spirit of its community, which established a new settlement a short distance away.

The traditions of the village remain deeply rooted and come alive during the Feast of San Nicola, celebrated on December 6, with religious processions and moments of community gathering.

What to see around Craco

Craco’s location makes it easy to explore southeastern Basilicata.

Just a few kilometers away are the towns of Pisticci, Aliano, and Tursi.

In less than an hour, one can also reach the Ionian coast, between Metaponto and Policoro.

Don’t forget to capture a memory from Craco and share it on social media!
