What the Tourism Sustainability Equation Is and Why It Matters for

What the Tourism Sustainability Equation Is

The Tourism Sustainability Equation, presented by Ruben Santopietro and reflected in initiatives such as 99% of Italy and Luminous Destinations, proposes to view tourism not as mere visitor counts but as a balance among three interconnected dimensions. The aim is to enable destination growth without sacrificing identity, residents’ quality of life or the authenticity of experiences.

The model centers on three pillars that must be considered together to ensure sustainable and lasting tourism:

  • Resident wellbeing — the daily life of local communities must be preserved; authentic places depend on the quality of life of those who live there.
  • Territorial carrying capacity — spaces, infrastructure, services and the housing market have real limits that must be respected to avoid overload and degradation.
  • Quality of experience — visitors should encounter living places, not emptied stage sets; experiences lose value when sites are congested or homogenized.

In practice, the Equation becomes a tool for everyday decisions: spreading visitor flows, supporting local markets and artisans, and planning interventions that strengthen social fabric rather than erode it. Technology, storytelling and media can support these goals by respectfully telling place-based narratives and fostering genuine connections between travelers and communities.

The message to operators, policymakers and travelers is straightforward: measure success not only by arrival numbers, but by the ability to leave places stronger, more balanced and more vibrant.
