Cogne, located in the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park, overlooks the wide Sant'Orso meadow, one of the largest high mountain grasslands in Europe. The municipality is located at an altitude of 1,544 metres and boasts Gran Paradiso as its highest peak, the only entirely Italian “four-thousander”, at 4,061 metres. An ancient mining centre known for iron extraction, Cogne has been able to transform itself into a tourist resort of great charm, while maintaining a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. The town is appreciated for its quality hospitality and attention to the preservation of its natural heritage, offering visitors hiking, winter sports and moments of relaxation immersed in a mountain setting of extraordinary beauty.
The beauty of the village
In the centre of Cogne, the 17th-century parish church of Sant'Orso is well worth a visit, with its precious carved and gilded wooden altars. The naves were decorated in 1960 by the painter Nino Pirlato, while the 18th-century organ, rebuilt in 1872 with the contribution of King Victor Emmanuel II, bears witness to the historical importance of the area. Next to it is the Royal Castle, an ancient bishop's residence later acquired by the King for hunting trips. Not far away, the Maison di Pits preserves the tradition of bobbin lace, brought here in the 16th century by the nuns of Cluny.
Walking through the centre, you will come across the famous iron fountain, a symbol of life after death, overlooking the lawn of Sant'Orso. In Località Sonveulla, you will find the Maison de Cogne Gerard-Dayné, an example of traditional Aosta Valley architecture.
The events and traditions of the village
Cogne is not only nature and history, but also traditions and gastronomy. A visit to the village cannot be complete without a hearty lunch to savour the typical local dishes. These include Seupetta di Cogne, a soup with rice, bread, fontina cheese, butter and spices, and Soça di Cogne, made with potatoes, meat, leeks, butter and fontina cheese. For dessert, Crema di Cogne, made with eggs, cream and chocolate, will delight every palate. Don't miss the Deveteya, the descent of the herds from the mountain pastures in September, a traditional festival with parades, songs and music, symbolising the agricultural roots of the village.
What to see around Cogne
In the surrounding area, Valnontey offers scenic walks and access to the Gran Paradiso trails, while the Paradisia Botanical Garden is home to around 1,000 alpine species. The hamlet of Lillaz is home to the spectacular Lillaz waterfalls, which can also be visited in winter by ice climbers. Finally, the Cogne Mines and the miners' village tell the story of the area's industrial past, now promoted by the National Park Visitor Centre and the Alpinart Exhibition Centre.
