Five Abruzzo bids for Italian Book Capital 2027

The Abruzzo region has put forward five projects for the Italian Book Capital 2027: individual bids and a large aggregated candidacy led by Teramo.

• Bucchianico – “Bucchianico City-Laboratory of Reading. Community, Traditions and Innovation”.
• Fossacesia – “The Fishing Machines – Narrative, Sea and Community on the Costa dei Trabocchi”.
• Lanciano – “Lanciano, the city that tells. From printing presses to voice: the book from type to urban narration”.
• San Salvo – “Bridges of Words. Crossroads of destinies. The Trigno Valley reads and blossoms”.
• Teramo – aggregated bid (“Teramo and its valleys”) together with 18 neighbouring municipalities on the Adriatic coast and inland.

There are 31 applications in total for the 2027 title, with 92 municipalities involved across aggregated proposals. The deadline for submissions expired on 18 April 2026.

The Ministry’s timetable foresees the selection of up to 10 finalists by 30 June 2026, with the jury submitting its recommendation to the Minister by 31 July 2026. The winning city may receive a grant of up to €500,000 to implement the activities in its dossier.

The candidacies emphasize books and reading as tools for inclusion, innovation and local development.
