Ciciliano at Città della Scienza: 94% of Italian municipalities at hydrogeological risk

At the opening of the touring exhibition “Terremoti d’Italia” at Città della Scienza in Naples, the head of the National Civil Protection Department, Fabio Ciciliano, said that «the national territory is very fragile: more than 94% of municipalities are at hydrogeological risk, exposed to landslides and floods».

Ciciliano mentioned the case of Niscemi as emblematic: «one of the largest landslides in Europe», a historical phenomenon (noted since 1790) that nevertheless demands concrete interventions and technical expertise to secure lasting solutions.

  • Context: inauguration of the touring exhibition “Terremoti d’Italia” at Città della Scienza (Naples).
  • Risk highlighted: over 94% of Italian municipalities exposed to hydrogeological hazards.
  • Example cited: the historic Niscemi landslide, underlining the need for structural action.

Ciciliano’s remarks underscore how cultural and scientific exhibitions can raise public awareness about territorial fragility and the preventive measures needed to protect communities and cultural heritage.
