The Church of Saint Ivo at La Sapienza, nestled within the complex of the Palazzo della Sapienza—the former seat of the University of Rome—is one of the highest and most original achievements of Baroque architecture. Its construction, entrusted to Francesco Borromini, spanned from 1642 to 1660. The building stands on the site of the former 14th-century university chapel of San Salvatore, later dedicated to Saint Ivo, patron saint of lawyers, in homage to the Faculty of Law.
Constrained by the existing courtyard, Borromini conceived a work of extraordinary inventiveness, both in plan and elevation, blending complex geometric forms into a harmonious and dynamic whole. More than a simple church, Saint Ivo symbolizes exceptional architectural intelligence—a jewel that defies convention and was born to serve the academic community, eventually becoming a universally celebrated monument.
Church of Saint Ivo at La Sapienza: a harmony of complex forms
The church’s exterior is an integral part of the elegant courtyard of the Palazzo della Sapienza, designed by Giacomo della Porta. The concave façade, shaped to fit the curve of the courtyard, acts as a theatrical backdrop and introduces the brilliance of the interior. Its most extraordinary feature is the lantern of the dome—a true sculptural masterpiece that spirals skyward. It is characterized by a spiral or “candlestick” topped with a bronze flame, symbolizing the Holy Spirit and divine wisdom.
The dome itself, hidden from view by the drum, has an original shape based on the superimposition of triangles and circles, creating a unique and recognizable profile in the Roman skyline. The interior, with a central plan, is a dizzying interplay of complex geometries where triangles and circles merge to form a dynamic and singular space. The structure is dominated by the imposing dome, which rises above a tall drum pierced by windows, flooding the space with light.
The dome is adorned with stuccoes and culminates in the lantern, emphasizing its dramatic vertical thrust. The apse houses the sumptuous main altar, topped by a canopy with twisted columns, while the walls are animated by rich Baroque stuccoes. Among the artworks, the 18th-century altarpiece depicting Saint Ivo in Glory stands out. Every architectural and decorative detail contributes to an atmosphere of sublime spiritual elevation, the result of Borromini’s absolute genius.
