Nicknamed the Stone Village, Chianale is a small Occitan village located at 1,800 meters above sea level and recently included in the list of The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy. Its name in the Occitan language is La Cianal, meaning “canal,” which either refers to a canalization of the Varaita stream running between the houses or, according to others, to the very source of the river.
The stone village lies along the ancient Chemin Royal, the salt road that once led to France. From Chianale begins a spectacular climb up to 2,748 meters, accessible by car only in summer, reaching the Colle dell’Agnello, from where one descends into the French region of Queyras.
The sloping roofs, stone houses, and wooden windows overlooking the narrow, characteristic alleys of the village make the journey through its history a fully immersive and unique experience, creating special memories to be cherished forever.
What to see in Chianale
The village of Chianale is divided into two main areas, separated by the stream that runs through it (hence the name Chianale). The two parts remain connected thanks to two historic stone bridges, from which timeless landscapes can be admired.
Walking through the village, one encounters wonderful sights such as the Parish Church of Sant’Antonio, with its large Gothic-style stone portal. Inside, beautiful frescoes solemnly honor the sacredness and history of the place. Also not to be missed is the ancient rectory, now home to the Ecomuseum of Occitan Culture, which tells the traditions and stories of Alpine populations.
The village is full of historic fountains, ancient ovens scattered along its streets, and underground stables—all of which enhance the unique experience and create memories that transcend time and generations.
Traditions and events
The Stone Village of Chianale keeps alive the memory of its origins and the culture of the Occitan peoples of the Alps. In summer, concerts and performances in the local language are held here, along with folk festivals and various events. Chianale is also a stop on the Val Varaita Trekking, a 12-day hiking route that crosses the entire Varaita Valley.
One of the most important celebrations is undoubtedly the patronal feast of Sant’Antonio Abate, with its distinctive procession and convivial gatherings that involve everyone in the village.
Around Chianale
The Stone Village is located in one of the best spots both for logistics and for the breathtaking views it offers. From Chianale, one quickly reaches the Colle dell’Agnello, one of the highest and most visited mountain passes in Europe, linking the Varaita Valley with Provence. Numerous trekking paths allow exploration through the vegetation and around magnificent alpine lakes.
Not far away are the high hamlets of Pontechianale and Lake Castello, an artificial basin with emerald-colored waters that uniquely and evocatively reflect the entire landscape.
Chianale remains one of the most important destinations in Piedmont for what it offers and for the emotions it conveys. All that’s left is to pack your bags!
