Chamois: the village suspended between sky and silence

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 18:24

Chamois is one of the “Pearls of the Alps”, a title awarded to mountain villages that excel in environmental sustainability and soft mobility. It is a timeless place, where no cars circulate: a haven of peace ideal for families, couples, and anyone wishing to embrace the rhythms of an authentic environment.

Chamois can only be reached on foot or by a convenient cable car departing from Buisson. The luckiest can even experience a landing at the small alpine airstrip. This uniqueness helps Chamois preserve its authentic and natural values, protecting it from the contaminations of globalization.

Chamois rewards the effort to reach it with privileged views of unique, indescribable landscapes. Walking through its narrow streets lined with stone houses creates a deep bond with the place, where visitors become part of the whole, immersing themselves in the history and peace that permeate the stone walls of this beautiful ancient village.

What to see in Chamois

The village is a harmonious collection of corners to explore and admire. The Church of San Pantaleone was erected in 1681, but in 1838 the building was completely transformed and expanded, taking on the appearance it still preserves today, perfectly blending into the picturesque setting that seems to frame the village. Next to it lies the main square, welcoming visitors with disarming simplicity and tranquility.

Beyond its beauty, Chamois is also a sports hub, thanks to its ski area with several slopes of varying difficulty stretching over 16 kilometers, including marked itineraries for off-piste enthusiasts. Equally fascinating are the snowshoeing trails, offering the right dose of adventure for every type of explorer.

Not to be missed is the path leading to Lake Lod, a small crystalline body of water surrounded by larch woods, perfect for a picnic or an exploratory walk in idyllic scenery. From the village, two other main trails branch out: one toward Le Magdaline and the other to Col Pilaz, both offering extraordinary views and unforgettable memories at every step.

Traditions and events

Chamois may appear to be a quiet village nestled in a magnificent mountain landscape, but it is far more vibrant than it seems. It hosts many festivals and events of all kinds, including the international music festival Chamosic. Throughout the year, numerous fairs and celebrations take place, as well as excursions with long walks, including flat trails designed for children and families.

Unmissable is the evocative Torchlight Procession on December 31, organized to celebrate the last day of the year, with concerts, live music, and torches illuminating the slopes.

What to see around Chamois

Chamois is part of the “Cervino Mountain Paradise”, an alpine area that promotes outdoor activities without invasive facilities that could harm the local flora and fauna. Nearby lies the ancient village of Suis, built entirely of stone and reachable only with a short walk from Chamois.

Chamois is not just a destination but a way of experiencing the mountains and life itself — slowly, calmly, and in touch with what truly matters.
