The centennial exhibition reconstructs a century of acquisitions, reshufflings and institutional changes of Rome's Galleria d'Arte Moderna through a display spread over three floors and featuring approximately 120 works. The show is curated by Arianna Angelelli with Ilaria Miarelli Mariani, and contributions from Paola Lagonigro, Ilaria Arcangeli, Antonio Ferrara and Vanda Lisanti.
The route highlights the collection's key moments and its connections to major Italian and European artistic movements, presenting works that document shifts in taste and municipal cultural policy.
The exhibition also follows the gallery's physical and institutional history: its origins and first opening at Palazzo Caffarelli (1925), the 1931 reopening under a new name, subsequent moves to Palazzo Braschi and the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, and the present location on via Francesco Crispi within the former Convent of the Carmelite nuns.
This exhibition provides both a chronological overview of public acquisition policy and insight into the diverse currents that shaped Italian art: from the plein air painting of the XXV della Campagna romana to exchanges with international figures (for example Rodin), and a renewed attention to mural and decorative techniques showcased in the displays.
Visiting offers an opportunity to explore not only artworks and artists but also the changing sites and cultural decisions that shaped the civic collection throughout the twentieth century.
