Castelrotto: traditions and magnificent views of South Tyrol

Autore: Redazione 26/08/2025 10:55

At the foot of the Sciliar, one of the most iconic massifs of the Dolomites, lies the ancient village of Castelrotto. With great charm and ancient farming traditions, it welcomes visitors by offering emotions and spectacular views.

Castelrotto offers a unique atmosphere of peace and quiet, with nature framing the village and the Alpe di Siusi seemingly protecting it. It enchants every type of traveler with its characteristic glimpses.

Be captivated by its frescoed houses as you stroll through its alleys, with flowered balconies and the silhouette of its imposing bell tower, one of the tallest in South Tyrol.

What to see in Castelrotto

The heart of the village is Piazza Kraus, one of its most evocative places. Looking up, you can admire the bell tower rising above the square. On clear days, the Sciliar massif and Punta Santner can be seen from here.

Not far from Piazza Kraus is the Museum of Traditional Costumes, which displays the typical garments of South Tyrol, worn during festivals and popular celebrations.

Also not to be missed are the painted houses—private residences, hotels, and historic venues with richly frescoed façades. Of particular beauty is Villa Felseck, an art-nouveau and neo-baroque building decorated with scenes of everyday life.

Traditions and events

Castelrotto is deeply tied to its historic traditions. One of the most famous events is the Kastelruther Spatzen Festival, dedicated to the folk music group that brought local culture across Europe. During the festival, Castelrotto is filled with music, dancing, and markets in every corner and street.

Also very evocative is the Procession of Saint Valentine, the village’s patron saint, which enlivens the town with tastings, music, and dances. Another important event is the Cattle Drive Festival, celebrating the ancient custom of transhumance, when herds return from the alpine pastures in autumn.

Exploring the surroundings

Castelrotto enjoys a privileged position for discovering the Alpe di Siusi, the largest plateau in Europe, a favorite destination for hiking, horseback riding, day trips, and winter sports.

Nearby are also other charming and ancient villages such as Siusi and Fiè allo Sciliar, as well as the city of Bolzano, with its famous museums and the celebrated Ötzi, the Iceman.

Visiting Castelrotto means exploring a place rich in emotions and views, preserving its strong alpine identity, and offering visitors an unforgettable encounter with nature, culture, and tradition!
