Castelmagno is a small scattered municipality in the province of Cuneo that stretches along the slopes of Valle Grana. Located at about 1,141 metres above sea level, with its sanctuary reaching 1,761 metres, the area is a clear example of alpine settlement where stone houses, pastures and trails tell the story of human adaptation to a mountainous environment.
Among Castelmagno’s hamlets lies Narbona, an abandoned village at approximately 1,445 metres. Left empty in 1961, Narbona still shows a church, former school buildings and dwellings with period objects, offering the sensation of a place frozen in time. Its steep siting has earned it the description of a “vertical” village and inspired local legends about its origins.
The recommended starting point is the Colletto hamlet of Castelmagno. From there a trail climbs the west side of the valley, with views over the Bial stream, up to the ruins of Narbona. You can return via Valliera to complete a scenic loop.
A classic excursion is the Colletto > Narbona > Valliera loop, offering a mix of panoramas, ruins and wooded sections. For a deeper exploration, include stops in nearby localities such as Batuira, Valliera and Campofei, which are often highlighted for their trails and traditional dairy activities.
Castelmagno and its abandoned hamlet provide an appealing option for visitors interested in authentic villages, local history and quieter mountain routes away from mainstream tourism.
