Castle of San Basilio – a military architecture in Basilicata

Autore: Redazione 02/10/2025 09:38

History and description

The Castle of San Basilio is located in the municipality of Pisticci, in the province of Matera, and represents one of the most significant examples of military architecture in Basilicata. Its origins probably date back to the 14th century, although the first traces of fortified settlements in this area go back to the Norman period. Its strategic position on a hill overlooking the valley below made it an important defensive outpost for controlling the surrounding territory and communication routes. The building develops around a polygonal plan, characterized by imposing walls and watchtowers. Over the centuries, the castle underwent several restorations and expansions, particularly during the Renaissance, when the fortifications were adapted to respond to the new military techniques of the time. Today, the Castle of San Basilio still preserves much of its original grandeur and stands as a fundamental monument for understanding the medieval and Renaissance history of Basilicata.

Curiosities

Among the castle’s peculiarities is its panoramic position, which offers a striking view of the surrounding hills and the Ionian coast, a reminder of its role as a watchtower. In addition, the castle has often been the subject of legends and popular tales, linked to supposed secret passages and mysteries that enhance its historical charm.

Access

Accessible with prior reservation recommended, the site can be visited at the cost of €5, with free entry and specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Located just outside the historic center of Pisticci, the castle is easily reachable by car via the SS106 Jonica, following the signs to the village, or by public transport from Matera or Metaponto, and then on foot to the site.

A witness of past eras and guardian of legends, the Castle of San Basilio is an unmissable destination for those wishing to discover the medieval history of Basilicata in a unique panoramic setting.
