Castello della Monica – one of the most original symbols of Teramo

Autore: Redazione 01/10/2025 20:50

History and description

Built at the end of the 19th century, the Castello della Monica in Teramo was designed and constructed by the local artist Gennaro Della Monica, who made it both his residence and workshop. Inspired by medieval architecture, the castle features a Neo‑Gothic structure with Moorish decorative elements, turrets, battlements, and pointed arches that evoke the atmosphere of a fairytale village. The building stands on San Venanzio hill, overlooking the historic center of the city, and is surrounded by gardens and smaller buildings that form the so‑called “Borgo della Monica.” Inside, the castle preserves frescoes and decorations painted by Della Monica himself, depicting ornamental motifs, landscapes, and symbolic themes. After the owner’s death, the castle was abandoned for many years, but recent restoration works have returned to the city a place of great artistic and cultural charm.

Curiosities

In addition to being one of the most original landmarks of Teramo, the Castello della Monica is the subject of numerous local legends, including tales of underground secret passages connecting it to other historic buildings in the city. Despite its medieval appearance, it is in fact a modern creation, built to embody the romantic imagination of its creator. For many years it was hidden by vegetation and surrounding buildings, but today, thanks to urban redevelopment, it is once again visible in all its exceptional beauty.

Access

Open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, the site is freely accessible.

How to reach it

Located in the historic center of Teramo, the castle can be reached by car via the A24 motorway (Teramo Ovest exit), by bus (lines 1 or 5), or on foot from Piazza Garibaldi.

With its unique style and dreamlike atmosphere, the Castello della Monica is an unmissable stop for anyone visiting Teramo.
