History and description
Designed at the end of the 19th century by Gennaro della Monica, from whom it takes its name, the Castello della Monica is a building in Neo-Gothic and Moorish style. It was built after the demolition of a church, from which many materials and decorations were reused. After the artist’s death, the castle passed into the hands of the Municipality, which began a restoration project. Considered incomplete, the castle embodies 18th–19th century style and includes two secondary buildings forming the so-called medieval village, as well as a series of interior rooms—today mostly inaccessible—featuring frescoed ceilings painted by the artist himself, among which those depicting the Templar knights stand out.
Curiosities
Known as a probable site of secret passages, the castle is inseparably linked to a legend according to which a gypsy cursed Della Monica, predicting his death once the castle was completed—hence the reason why the works were never finished.
Access
Closed inside as it is considered unsafe, the castle can be visited in its external areas free of charge from Thursday to Sunday.
How to reach it
Although easily accessible by car, with available parking, it is recommended to reach the site on foot, taking an uphill walk that leads directly to the village.
An outstanding expression of Romantic art thanks to its crenellated spires, the Castello della Monica is a place steeped in art and mystery, allowing visitors to lose themselves in its extraordinary beauty!
