Catajo Castle: The Royal Palace of the Euganean Hills Between History, Art, and Nature

Autore: Redazione 29/08/2025 08:35

In the heart of the Venetian countryside, surrounded by the enchanting landscape of the Euganean Hills, rises the majestic Catajo Castle. Often referred to as the “royal palace of the Euganean Hills”, this extraordinary architectural complex, with its 350 rooms, stands as a symbol of centuries of history, art, and splendor. Built by the noble Obizzi family, the castle has witnessed the passage of great dynasties, leaving behind a cultural and artistic legacy that continues to fascinate visitors today.

The Origins and the Obizzi Family

The story of Catajo Castle began in the 16th century, when Pio Enea I degli Obizzi commissioned its construction. The Obizzi family, originally from Bologna and later settled in Padua, was among the most influential and affluent of the time. The project was not intended to create a defensive fortress, but rather a luxurious residence designed to host grand receptions and celebrations while glorifying the family’s prestige.

The name “Catajo” is thought to derive from the dialect expression “ca’ da tai”, meaning “house of the cuts”, a reference to the drainage canals that once surrounded the area. The structure, developed around a vast courtyard of honor, masterfully combines elements of military architecture with the elegance of a Renaissance villa.

The Frescoes of Veronese and Zelotti

The castle’s artistic splendor reached its peak under the nephew of Pio Enea I, who commissioned an extensive cycle of frescoes to decorate its walls and ceilings. The commission was entrusted to Giovan Battista Zelotti, a pupil of Paolo Veronese and one of the finest Venetian painters of the late Renaissance.

These frescoes, still visible in the Hall of Giants (Salone dei Giganti) and other rooms, depict the history of the Obizzi family — from the heroic deeds of their ancestors to their military exploits — rendered with vivid detail and striking color. Mythological and allegorical scenes intertwine with portraits and battle scenes, forming a grand visual epic that makes a visit to Catajo Castle an unforgettable experience.

From the Habsburgs to the Dalla Francesca Family

Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times, becoming first a residence of the Habsburg-Este family and later part of the Austrian Empire’s estates. During this period, Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria and Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) stayed at the castle on several occasions. It was further expanded and adorned with new decorations and furnishings.

After World War I, the castle became property of the Italian State, before being sold to private owners. Today, it belongs to the Dalla Francesca family, who continue to preserve and promote this historical treasure with dedication.
