Castel San Vincenzo, the village suspended over the lake

Autore: Redazione 29/08/2025 13:16

In the enchanting Volturno Valley lies Castel San Vincenzo, a small treasure immersed in history and nature, with spectacular views of the turquoise waters of the lake of the same name and the majestic Mainarde mountains as a backdrop. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, between the 10th and 11th centuries, when the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno sought to protect its possessions through a reorganization of the surrounding territory. At that time, the two villages of Castellone and San Vincenzo were created, with Castellone taking on the role of main center of the Upper Volturno Valley. In the following centuries, the two settlements developed separately, until their official merger in 1928 by royal decree.

What to see in the village

Just outside the town, bordering the municipality of Rocchetta al Volturno, stands the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno with its monumental complex, founded in 700 by the Beneventan nobles Paldo, Tato, and Taso. Over the years it grew in importance, becoming a significant religious and cultural center. Particularly fascinating is the Crypt of Epiphanius, rich in frescoes, discovered by a farmer while working the fields.

Among the places to visit in the village are the two main churches: Santo Stefano and San Martino Vescovo, along with several palaces of notable cultural interest, such as the Town Hall, the former Conti-Regina Palace, the Canone Palace, and the palace that houses the “Oscar Caporaso” Museum of Apennine flora and fauna.

The Volturno waterfalls and the small Church of Madonna delle Grazie are other must-see sites nearby. For a truly evocative excursion, the Hermitage of San Michele a Foce offers a breathtaking view of the village and the lake below. The lake itself is a wonder to explore, offering visitors numerous activities.

Events

Numerous fairs, religious celebrations, and popular folkloric events enliven the local calendar, offering the chance to savor culinary specialties such as roasted lamb and kid, as well as local cheeses.
