Brindisi: update on the Sailor Monument and archaeological sites

With visitor numbers rising in Brindisi, checks on the city's monumental heritage have intensified. Some areas are temporarily unavailable: the Sailor Monument (Monumento al Marinaio d'Italia) and the archaeological area of San Pietro degli Schiavoni are currently closed for maintenance and safety reasons.

Structural inspections of walls and facades at the Sailor Monument have been completed; however, reopening awaits installation of a new safety railing and the restoration of the historic gate, which was dismantled at the end of 2024. No firm reopening date has been announced.

The archaeological site beneath the Nuovo Teatro Verdi has been transferred from the Superintendence to the municipal administration and is expected to reopen soon. Surveillance will be managed remotely via cameras connected to a security firm and municipal monitoring systems; the site will not have on-site staff.

Sites and services still available

Not all cultural sites are closed. Visitors can still access several museums and collections in the city.

  • Palazzina Belvedere: houses the Faldetta archaeological collection and operates extended opening hours.
  • "Ribezzo" Archaeological Museum in Piazza Duomo: open, with sections including underwater archaeology exhibits like the Bronzes of Punta del Serrone.
  • The Cathedral, the Church of San Paolo (with the diocesan museum) and the Temple of San Giovanni al Sepolcro remain accessible to visitors and pilgrims.

Practical information for visitors

  • Municipal infopoint: Palazzo Granafei-Nervegna provides updated information on openings and guided tours; check their hours before planning your visit.
  • Casa del Turista: services can vary—confirm in advance whether baggage storage or shower facilities are available.
  • Public toilets: some areas lack facilities; plan accordingly.
  • Signposting: directional signs may be limited or unclear—bring maps or consult the infopoint for orientation.
  • Castello Svevo: visits are pending a new schedule agreed with military authorities and local heritage groups.

Quick tips

  • Verify site openings in advance to avoid unnecessary travel.
  • If your interest is archaeological or religious, focus on the open museums and collections in the city centre.
  • Bear in mind that reopening dates depend on technical work and safety checks and may change.
