Province museums: 2025 overview

The 2025 museum admissions in the province of Cremona show a modest rise: 256,852 tickets sold, a 2.6% increase over 2024. The annual report highlights varied trends across institutions.

Top visited institutions

  • Museum of the Violin: 79,586 admissions (about 31% of the total).
  • Diocesan museum complex (Diocesan Museum, Baptistery, Vertical Museum of the Torrazzo): 50,194 admissions (about 20%).
  • Rocca Sforzesca and Soncino Printing Museum: 32,248 admissions (13%).
  • Cremona Civic Museum of Natural History: 25,172 admissions (10%).
  • Ala Ponzone Art Gallery: 12,916 admissions, down from 17,662 in 2024 (a decline of 4,746 visits).

Seasonal and territorial trends

Visitor flows mirror tourism patterns: spring months show the highest peaks, with May leading (37,362 admissions, 15% of the total), followed by April (35,625) and March (31,032). Autumn sees a recovery with November registering 24,699 visitors.

By area, Cremona accounts for most visits with 181,459 admissions (71%); Soncino follows with 39,806 (15%) and Crema with 10,629 admissions (4%).

Students and foreign visitors

Data on student groups and foreign tourists is incomplete: only 19 out of 25 structures provided student figures and 16 out of 25 supplied foreign visitor numbers. Available information indicates expected patterns: school visits peak in spring, while foreign tourists are most active in summer and autumn (July–October).

Reasons for the gallery's decline and signs of recovery

The municipal culture official linked the drop at the Ala Ponzone gallery to partial closures for heating system works and a temporary slowdown in promotional activities. Positive signs include the Civic Museum recording 5,500 visitors in the first four months of 2026 versus 4,400 in the same period of 2025, and the exhibition "Tribute to Rembrandt" drawing over 4,000 visitors. Three additional exhibitions are planned from September through the end of the year to support a recovery in attendance.

Effective strategies and services

  • Investment in welcome and promotion: improved ticketing and visitor routes at the diocesan complex.
  • Staff training and multilingual support: front-of-house staff trained in multiple languages to assist visitors, including Chinese in some venues.
  • Broader cultural programming: increased concerts and events attracting diverse audiences.

Local museum leaders say these measures are driving visitor growth and represent the main levers to strengthen the recovery of museum attendance across the province.
