Bova, the cliffside village born from a Queen

Autore: Redazione 08/08/2025 17:29

The ancient village of Bova has an Armenian origin story, according to which a queen led her people to Mount Vùa, once inhabited only by oxen.

Over the centuries, the village has endured numerous tragedies, including earthquakes, bombings during World War II, and plagues.

What to See in Bova

A visit to Bova begins with the ruins of the Norman Castle (10th–11th century), perched on a rocky spur, and the nearby Norman Tower, guardian of one of the medieval gates of the town. In the heart of the village stand three historic palaces: Mesiani-Mazzacuva, destined to become a cultural center dedicated to Magna Graecia; Nesci Sant’Agata; and Tuscano, which will host the Visitor Center of the Aspromonte National Park.

The Cathedral, an ancient episcopal seat, amazes with the Chapel of the Sacrament and the statue of the Madonna Isodìa. The Church of San Leo is notable for its sumptuous Baroque altar and the statue of Saint Leo by Pietro Bernini. Other stops include the churches of Carmine, Immacolata, Spirito Santo (now abandoned), and San Rocco, still active in the Greek-Byzantine rite. The itinerary ends at the evocative Balcony of Bova, offering sweeping views of the entire coastline.

Traditions and Events

Bova celebrates the Grecanic Carnival and Byzantine Easter, with the tradition of blessed palm leaves transformed into richly decorated anthropomorphic statues to ensure good harvests. In July and August, the Paleariza Festival takes place, dedicated to ethnic and Grecanic traditional music, enhancing Calabrian culture with dances such as the ballu di lu camiddhu, accompanied by castanets and tambourines.

Also in August, Bovarché is held, a festival of visual arts, literature, and poetry, a contemporary art laboratory that makes Bova an important cultural hub in Calabria. On November 11th, the Day of the Grecanic Language is celebrated, while on December 26th, the evocative Living Nativity Scene brings local tradition to life.

What to See Around Bova

In the surroundings of Bova, don’t miss the enchanting Aspromonte National Park, with trekking trails and breathtaking views. Visit the village of Gerace, famous for its medieval churches and authentic atmosphere. The Ionian coast offers peaceful beaches such as Brancaleone and Roccella Ionica. Also of interest is the Museum of Rural Civilization in Bova, which tells the story of local life. Finally, explore the nearby Grecanic villages to discover unique traditions and culture.
