The territory and history of Ostana

Located in the Po Valley, Ostana today has just over 80 inhabitants and is best known for its natural beauty and landscape, which has always been linked to pastoral activities. Its panorama is dominated by the vast mountain group of the Monviso Alps, including the surrounding peaks, the Cottian Alps, Colle della Croce, and Colle dell’Agnello—an unmissable destination for mountaineers and nature lovers alike.

As for its history, the first documented records of the village date back to the 1300s, particularly to a dispute with the municipality of Crissolo over boundary issues, although many scholars believe its origins go back to the Augustan era. From the Middle Ages, it was under the jurisdiction of the Enganna family, lords of Barge, and later the Marquises of Saluzzo, who granted it the right to draft its own municipal statutes. Its population, later dominated by the French and involved in the bread revolt of 1797, grew to 1,187 inhabitants between the 19th and early 20th centuries, before gradually declining after World War II to today’s numbers.

Things to do in Ostana

In addition to mountain tourism activities, thanks to the many available trails, Ostana offers the chance to visit the Villa or Town Hall, recently expanded, the Chapel of San Bërnart, and numerous ancient buildings in the hamlets of La Ruà (Borgata Cristiana), Miriquiri (Borgata Miri Chiri), Champanho (Ciampagna), Ras (Borgata Raso), and more.

Today, alongside its museum and natural beauty, the village is also known for its local products and for the Film School of Fredo Valla and Giorgio Diritti, now in its third edition.
