The Croatia National Pavilion at the 61st Venice Art Biennale showcases Compelled by Fright and Beauty, a site-specific project by Dubravka Lošić installed in Palazzo Zorzi. The presentation merges painting, sculptural practice and textile materials to create an environment that probes vulnerability, memory and the balance between containment and escape.
Lošić intervenes on canvas and traditional media through stitching, binding and sealing, revealing tensions between what is held in and what emerges. The installation occupies both the courtyard and the piano nobile, producing an atmosphere that oscillates between the uncanny and the beautiful and encouraging a contemplative, sensory encounter with the works.
The installation will appeal to audiences interested in contemporary practices that blur disciplinary boundaries: painting becomes bodily, sculpture preserves traces of manual intervention, and textiles carry narratives of protection and loss. The installation encourages slow looking, with attention to material tensions and the silences embedded in the works.
Visitor tips: check opening hours in advance, plan to visit the piano nobile to fully appreciate the spatial arrangement, and register for press previews if you require restricted access.
