Baselitz. AVANTI! at Museo Novecento, Florence

From 25 March to 13 September 2026 Museo Novecento in Florence presents "Baselitz. AVANTI!", a major exhibition dedicated to Georg Baselitz that foregrounds his graphic practice. Curated by Sergio Risaliti in collaboration with the artist's studio, the show occupies the museum's three floors and brings together about 170 works including prints, paintings and sculptures.

Why see it

  • Graphic practice as laboratory: woodcuts, linocuts and etchings reveal how Baselitz used printmaking to explore sign and surface.
  • Image inversion: the upside-down motif, introduced in the late 1960s, disrupts automatic reading and encourages a more deliberate engagement.
  • A thematic and chronological route that ranges from historic cycles to the artist's recent series, with some works shown for the first time.

Exhibition highlights

  • Approximately 170 works documenting more than sixty years of research.
  • A dedicated section to the centrality of printmaking in Baselitz's practice.
  • Sculptures in wood and bronze that retain traces of the working process as expressive elements.

Connection to Florence

Baselitz's 1965 stay at Villa Romana was pivotal: the encounter with Italian Mannerism and anti-classical suggestions left lasting marks on his formal and thematic concerns, evident in the works on display.
