Bagnoli del Trigno, the Pearl of Molise near the river

Autore: Redazione 29/09/2025 19:17

Nicknamed the ‘Pearl of Molise’, Bagnoli del Trigno is a charming village in the province of Isernia, nestled among the rocks overlooking the Trigno river valley. Its unique location divides it into two distinct areas: the ‘Terra di Sotto’ (Lower Land), at 660 metres, and the higher ‘Terra di Sopra’ (Upper Land), which reaches 783 metres, offering breathtaking views.

Strolling through the picturesque streets, where Gothic, medieval and baroque styles intertwine, you can breathe in a timeless atmosphere that culminates in the remains of the Lombard castle, perched on a rocky spur.

The origins of the village remain shrouded in legend: some link them to an ancient thermal complex called “Balneoli”, others to a knight in search of refreshment, and still others to tribes fleeing barbarian invasions. Already known in Roman times and part of the Contado del Molise in the Middle Ages, Bagnoli has experienced noble domination, modern innovations and a strong migratory phenomenon, while preserving its evocative identity intact.

What to see in Bagnoli del Trigno

In Bagnoli del Trigno, the main attractions are concentrated in the two areas of the village, Terra di Sopra and Terra di Sotto, offering an itinerary through history, architecture and breathtaking views.

On top of the rock stands the Sanfelice Castle, dating back to the Lombard era, once a defensive bastion and home to noble families. the climb up the picturesque Sanfelice Staircase offers spectacular views of the Trigno valley, although the castle is not yet open to the public due to restoration work. Below is the extraordinary church of San Silvestro, nestled between two rocky spurs, with three naves, an 18th-century marble altar and a bell tower with an onion dome decorated with coloured majolica tiles.

In the lower part of the town, the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta stands out, an 18th-century Baroque building with a single nave and polychrome stuccoes, next to the bell tower which houses a heavy bell from the Pontifical Marinelli foundry in Agnone. Among the streets of the historic centre, you can also admire the church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, Piazza Olmo and the largest permanent nativity scene in Molise, which can be visited on request.

Events and typical dishes of the village

In Bagnoli del Trigno, tradition and gastronomy come together in events that celebrate local culture and flavours. Among the most popular events are the patron saint festivals and summer fairs, when the village squares come alive with music, dancing and socialising.

The cuisine of Bagnoli del Trigno makes the most of genuine ingredients and typical recipes, such as dishes based on wild boar, lamb and local legumes, accompanied by homemade bread and extra virgin olive oil. There is no shortage of traditional desserts, often prepared for religious holidays or family celebrations.

Participating in these events means not only tasting Molise cuisine, but also experiencing the authentic atmosphere of the village, among the historic streets and panoramic views that make Bagnoli del Trigno a unique place in the heart of Molise.
