Badalucco, one of The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy, rises at 179 meters above sea level at the entrance of the enchanting Argentina Valley, just a few kilometers from the Ligurian coast. From the Hill of San Nicolò, one can admire a unique panorama: terraced olive groves, lush nature, and the typical urban layout of the hinterland, sloping down toward the waters of the stream. An ideal refuge for those seeking peace, relaxation, and good food away from the crowded beaches, it preserves an ancient history. The toponym, documented since the 13th century, recalls functions of surveillance, warrior origins, or Phoenician cults. Inhabited since the Eneolithic period, it was the scene of battles between Ligurians and Romans and, after the Counts of Ventimiglia, it passed under Genoa, experiencing a long period of prosperity.
What to see in Badalucco
Much of Badalucco’s urban fabric, enclosed by a wall with five gates, was formed in the 15th century. The village preserves the typical Ligurian structure, with exposed stone houses, narrow caruggi, covered passages, stairways, and colorful little squares. The heart of life is Piazza Duomo, dominated by the Baroque church of Santa Maria Assunta and San Giorgio and the 16th-century Palazzo Boeri; nearby stands the Gothic Palazzo della Confraria. Also worth visiting are the 18th-century church of Nostra Signora della Misericordia and the picturesque medieval bridges of Madonna degli Angeli and Santa Lucia. At the top of the hill lie the ruins of the castle of the Counts of Ventimiglia and the small church of San Nicolò. The streets are enriched by the open-air Museum of Ceramics, while the geological trail “Oceano Badalucco” tells the fascinating story of ancient seas and Alpine folds.
Village events
Badalucco boasts a rich calendar of events that combine tradition and conviviality. At Easter, the historic game of “Scotezzo” is renewed: after Sunday Mass, locals and visitors challenge each other by knocking chicken eggs together, in a joyful atmosphere involving young and old alike. Every August 5, the Feast of the Madonna della Neve is celebrated, with religious rites and a suggestive procession up to the Sanctuary on Monte Carmo, blending faith and landscape. The most famous event is the Festival dello Stoccafisso a Baücôgna, held on the third Sunday of September. With over fifty editions, it has become a symbol of the Ligurian hinterland: the village streets come alive with shows, music, and folklore, while the traditional dish takes center stage in tastings and festive gatherings.
What to see around Badalucco
Just a few kilometers from Badalucco, countless opportunities open up to discover the Ligurian hinterland. The village of Dolceacqua enchants with its famous Doria Castle and picturesque medieval alleys, while Taggia offers the charm of its historic center and the Diocesan Museum. Along the Argentina Valley, trails wind through terraced olive groves and lush woods, ideal for walks and scenic hikes. Nearby Imperia offers beaches, harbors, and characteristic markets. For nature lovers, Monte Faudo and the Argentina stream provide breathtaking views and refreshing summer stops. These places combine history, culture, and natural landscapes, offering varied experiences just minutes from the village.
