Suspended between the clouds and the ancient caves carved by the Dora Baltea stream, Avise appears as an alpine jewel. Nestled in nature, it rises at 762 meters on the left bank of the Dora, surrounded by vineyards that produce the renowned Petit Rouge wine. Among the Roman-era remains, one can admire a section of the Via delle Gallie, known as Pierre Taillée (“cut stone”), named after the incision in the rock that was necessary to open the passage toward the valleys of Mont Blanc.
Walking through Avise means immersing yourself in a pure and authentic atmosphere, crossing idyllic landscapes that seem to suspend time, offering unique emotions and glimpses that reconnect us with the world.
What to see in Avise
Avise preserves remarkable historical and architectural treasures such as the Castle of Avise, flanked by an ancient square watchtower. Inside, ancient artifacts are kept, and the castle itself rises over three floors, dominating the surrounding landscape—certainly worth a visit.
Also worth seeing is the Maison de Blonay, once the residence of the powerful local family that gave its name to the village, the first home of the Lords of Avise.
Equally fascinating are the Maison de Mosse, a medieval residence, and the fortress of Cré, now partly destroyed but still offering a breathtaking panoramic view thanks to its position on the edge of the promontory next to the village.
A must-see is also the Parish Church of San Brizio, which houses important and valuable sacred works. Rebuilt in the last century, it still preserves its Romanesque bell tower dating back to the 1400s.
Traditions and events
Life in Avise is marked by festivals and gatherings for the whole community. One of the most cherished events is the patronal feast of San Brizio, which enlivens every corner of the village with music and traditional cuisine.
Also famous is the Sagra della Fiocca, first held in 1972, which takes place every year at the end of June in the village of Baulin, at the entrance to Valgrisenche. Traditionally, the “fiocca” (cream) is whipped by hand with willow whisks inside a cold cave, in a ritual full of energy and conviviality.
Exploring the surroundings of Avise
The strategic position of Avise makes it easy to explore the central part of the Aosta Valley. Around the village, trails wind through vineyards and woods, perfect for trekking and nature lovers.
Not to be missed is the Avise Gorge, a spectacular natural canyon carved by the erosive force of the Dora Baltea.
A short distance from the village, you can also reach other castles of the Aosta Valley, such as La Salle and the Castle of Arvier, or dedicate time to discovering Aosta and its landscapes.
Mountain enthusiasts can venture into the Gran Paradiso National Park, with its pristine panoramas and rich alpine wildlife.
Avise is a panoramic village, vibrant and full of discoveries—just pack your bags and get ready to enjoy all the emotions this place has to offer!
