Atina, one of Italy's most beautiful villages, lies in the heart of the Comino Valley in the province of Frosinone, with a history stretching back thousands of years. The origins of its name remain uncertain: it could derive from the roots “attin”, “ant”, “at” meaning “high”, referring to its elevated position, or from the Greek “Athena”, or even from the myth of the god Saturn, who founded it in honour of his grandson Anitino. Its history is a mixture of legends and archaeological evidence: Virgil called it “potens” (powerful) because of its wealth, already documented by bronze artefacts from the 8th-7th century BC. From a Roman city to a municipality, from Lombard rule to a 19th-century economic centre, Atina still retains the charm and memory of its ancient roots.
The beauties of the village
The village of Atina is enclosed by imposing polygonal walls dating back to the 4th century BC, which extend for 6 km and bear witness to the ancient strategic importance of the city. Access is through the Porta dell'Arco, which leads to Piazza Garibaldi, dominated by the Fontanone, the Convent of San Francesco and the impressive Roman cistern (3rd-1st century BC). The historic centre is characterised by narrow streets, monumental arches and palaces enriched with Roman inscriptions.
At the top stands the Palazzo Ducale, seat of the town hall, built by the Cantelmo family after the earthquake of 1349: it houses a 2nd-century Roman mosaic, 14th-century frescoes and multimedia rooms. Other noteworthy buildings include the Palazzo della Prepositura (1598), commissioned by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio for pilgrims, and the 18th-century Palazzo Visocchi, with a private chapel and rare period decorations.
The religious heart of the town is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with a Baroque façade framed by two bell towers and a richly decorated interior. Next door, the G. Visocchi Archaeological Museum preserves local finds and artefacts from the Comino Valley.
The nearby hill of S. Stefano preserves the remains of the acropolis and medieval fortress, offering a picturesque view. In the surrounding area, the archaeological site of San Marco and the church of San Marciano bear witness to the continuity of worship from Roman times to early Christianity.
Events in Atina
In Atina, excellent food and wine and major events enliven the village. The renowned Cabernet di Atina DOC, a full-bodied red wine with an intense aroma, and the delicate DOP cannellino bean, tender and easy to digest, are symbols of local tradition. Summer is the highlight: in July, the Atina Jazz Festival, one of the most prestigious in Italy, brings world-famous jazz musicians to Piazza Marconi.
In August, CantinAtina is celebrated, a wine festival that opens the cellars of the historic centre for tastings and typical dishes. Also in August, the Festival delle Storie (Festival of Stories) transforms the Comino Valley into a unique narrative stage.
