The Art Outside the Museum programme is growing in Rome: artworks kept in museum storerooms are being restored and installed in prominent hotels to raise awareness of collections and encourage visits to the museums where they originate.
Born from an agreement between the Directorate General for Museums, the non‑profit LoveItaly and Federalberghi Lazio, the project has already placed statues and artifacts in several hospitality venues. Early examples include a statue of the goddess Roma at the Hotel Mediterraneo (October 2024) and the recent unveiling of an Aphrodite Cnidia head at Albergo Senato.
The main aims are:
Organisers say that placing artworks in high‑traffic locations can motivate visitors to seek out the museums of origin, strengthening local cultural engagement.
Exhibitions and placements are carried out with the supervision of the lending museums and financed by the hosting hotels and private partners. Visitors interested in seeing items displayed outside museum venues should check hotel opening times and announcements from the lending museums for the latest information.
