“Art Outside the Museum”: Rome widens the initiative to showcase collections in hotels

The Art Outside the Museum programme is growing in Rome: artworks kept in museum storerooms are being restored and installed in prominent hotels to raise awareness of collections and encourage visits to the museums where they originate.

Born from an agreement between the Directorate General for Museums, the non‑profit LoveItaly and Federalberghi Lazio, the project has already placed statues and artifacts in several hospitality venues. Early examples include a statue of the goddess Roma at the Hotel Mediterraneo (October 2024) and the recent unveiling of an Aphrodite Cnidia head at Albergo Senato.

Upcoming displays

  • Hotel Bernini Bristol: a curvilinear marble pediment from the Appian Way Archaeological Park (scheduled for May).
  • Hotel Canada: figurines of Aphrodite and Artemis from the Minturnae Archaeological Park.
  • Hotel Locarno: Etruscan vases and masks from the National Etruscan Museum at Villa Giulia.
  • Hotel Nord Nuova Roma: Thorvaldsen’s Venus and Apple from the Academy of Saint Luke.
  • Palazzo Dama (near Piazza del Popolo): a bronze cista (4th–3rd c. BCE) from the National Etruscan Museum, on display since April.

Goals and practical benefits

The main aims are:

  • to introduce lesser‑visited museums and collections to a wider audience;
  • to support conservation and restoration of works held in storage;
  • to foster collaborative models between public institutions, private owners and non‑profits for cultural promotion.

Organisers say that placing artworks in high‑traffic locations can motivate visitors to seek out the museums of origin, strengthening local cultural engagement.

Practical information

Exhibitions and placements are carried out with the supervision of the lending museums and financed by the hosting hotels and private partners. Visitors interested in seeing items displayed outside museum venues should check hotel opening times and announcements from the lending museums for the latest information.
