Arnad: flavors and landscapes of the Aosta Valley

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 18:26

Arnad is a very ancient village with much to tell. With deep historical roots and ancient traditions, it stands as a mountain village that has become a fixed stop for explorers, both young and old.

Located at 340 meters above sea level, in an area where the central valley widens to form a small plain, this locality is renowned above all for its Lard d’Arnad, a tasty and fragrant PDO cold cut. But those who decide to stay here will also find other pleasant surprises. Arnad is spread along the mountain slope and connected by historic mule tracks, which allows the place to retain a kind of magical panorama and offers wide and authentic explorations through history and nature.

Climbing towards the Sanctuary of Machaby, the gaze gets lost among vineyards and castles carefully set into the landscape, leaving visitors with an indelible memory of the ascent to the sanctuary.

What to See in Arnad

A visit to the Sanctuary of Machaby is a must. Immersed in a centuries-old forest, it is a destination that manages to unite nature and spirituality. The sanctuary can be reached on foot with a short uphill walk and stands on a site frequented since Roman times.

Continuing with the union of nature and spirituality, it is impossible not to mention the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Nevi, nestled among chestnut trees in the Machaby valley, just 3 kilometers from the town center. It has very ancient origins, and on the square in front, visitors can admire some soapstone statues.

Also worth seeing is the Echallod Bridge, a medieval stone construction that connects the banks of the Dora River.

In the center of the village stands the characteristic Church of San Martino, adorned with beautiful frescoes and high-quality decorations. Arnad is full of medieval towers and castles, making it an excellent destination for lovers of authentic and unspoiled exploration.

Traditions and Events

In Arnad, history blends with the dynamic evolution of the village, which appears more alive than ever. Competitive sports such as sport fishing and climbing are practiced here, making this historic village a multicultural hub.

The village is also active in terms of events and traditions. The most famous is the Festa del Lardo di Arnad, celebrated on the last weekend of August. Known locally as Féhta dou lar, it is dedicated to the Vallée d'Aoste Lard d'Arnad PDO. This tradition has been repeated for over fifty years and attracts thousands of tourists.

Equally noteworthy is the Feast of Madonna delle Nevi at the Sanctuary of Machaby. On this occasion, the sanctuary is opened to welcome the many pilgrims who come to honor Our Lady of the Snow.

Around Arnad

The village is an excellent starting point for exploring the surrounding villages and castles that adorn the entire panorama of the lower Aosta Valley. Just a few steps away lies Verrès, with its famous austere castle, and Issogne, celebrated for its frescoed castle, one of the most fascinating and characteristic in Italy.

For hiking enthusiasts, there is the Cammino di Balteo, which allows exploration of the landscapes leading up to Mont Avic, a large natural park rich in alpine flora and glacial lakes.

Arnad is a village that combines flavor, history, and nature in a blend that remains impressed in the heart of anyone who visits.
