Archaeological area of Saepinum – a testament to roman life in Molise

Autore: Redazione 07/10/2025 22:43

History and Description

The archaeological area of Saepinum, also known as Altilia, is located near the village of Sepino, in the province of Campobasso, and is one of the best-preserved sites in Molise. Its origins date back to a Samnite settlement on Terravecchia Mountain, which was conquered by the Romans in 293 B.C., leading to the relocation of the population to the valley and the founding of the new city. During the Roman period, Saepinum became a municipium, especially in the Augustan age, when it was equipped with a well-structured city wall with towers and monumental gates.

The archaeological area covers about 12 hectares and preserves many elements of the Roman urban plan, including the decumanus, forum, basilica, theatre, macellum, baths, shops, and fountains. The outer walls stretch for over a kilometer, interspersed with towers and four main gates. The most impressive monument is the Roman theatre, built during the Imperial period with an estimated capacity of about 3,000 spectators, partly “covered” by 18th-century farmhouses that occupy the summa cavea. Over time, the city declined until it was finally abandoned.

Curiosities

Saepinum is often called the “Little Pompeii of Molise” for the exceptional preservation of its Roman urban spaces and the clear readability of its city layout. The site regularly hosts cultural events, such as guided tours, theatrical performances, and exhibitions of archaeological finds, making it a living testimony rather than a static ruin.

Access Information

The Archaeological Park of Sepino can be visited with a combined ticket that includes both the archaeological area and the Museum of the City and Territory, costing €10, with free and reduced entry options available.

How to Get Here

The site is located in Altilia, along Provincial Road SP82, and is easily accessible by car.

Saepinum-Altilia is a true archaeological gem of Molise, not to be missed for its remarkably preserved remains!
