The solo exhibition by Gianfranco Pacini, titled In viaggio con gli stecchi, opened on Thursday, April 16 at the Fortilizio della Cittadella (the so-called "House of Pisan Artists"). Curated by Nicola Micieli and organized by the Municipality of Pisa, the show brings together paintings, prints and installations that feature Pacini's distinctive use of stecchi—small sticks elevated to compositional and symbolic elements.
The exhibition offers an anthological route through the artist's production, juxtaposing early experiments with mature works that blend natural motifs (sea, skies, landscapes) and more abstract, symbolic forms. Two large sea-themed paintings welcome visitors and set the tonal and geometric register of the display.
The show presents more than 30 works that map Pacini's stylistic development, from his graphic experiments to the use of stecchi as figurative devices. It is an opportunity to see how humble materials are transformed into powerful symbolic signs with vivid color and striking compositional choices.
Gianfranco Pacini (born in Guamo, Lucca, 1955) trained at the Istituto d'Arte of Lucca and the Academy of Fine Arts in Pisa. His experiences in Latin America deeply influenced his practice, which combines painting, printmaking and mixed techniques and often engages social themes. Since the 1990s, stecchi have become a defining feature of his work.
Visitors are advised to check current opening times with the venue before planning their visit.
