Discovering Oriolo, the contested medieval village

Autore: Redazione 08/08/2025 17:56

The village of Oriolo, considered one of the most beautiful in Italy, owes its name to “barley grains.”

In fact, the first documents mentioning the village date back to the 12th century and were written in Greek, recording the toponym Orzoùlon.

Dominated by different peoples over the centuries, the castle of the village—one of its main attractions—has always been an object of desire for conquerors.

What to see in the village

The village of Oriolo offers numerous attractions to discover.

Among them is the Mother Church of San Giorgio, which houses precious relics of Saint George and Saint Francis of Paola, a collection of silverware, 17th-century Spanish statuettes, an 18th-century terracotta Ecce Homo, and the burial crypts of the original church, with their original terracotta floors.

The village also preserves the Sanseverino Castle, recently restored, which—as mentioned earlier—was long coveted by the many peoples who ruled over Oriolo.

Thanks to its position, the castle dominates the village with its original medieval structure, two watchtowers, and the keep, offering spectacular panoramic views.

Traditions and events

Oriolo celebrates traditional events such as the Feast of Saint George and that of Saint Francis of Paola, with processions and religious rites. During the summer, the village hosts cultural and musical performances in the historic center, while the Sanseverino Castle welcomes exhibitions and cultural events.

In addition, food festivals and craft markets are organized, enhancing local traditions. These events make Oriolo a lively place, rich in history and culture.

What to see around the village

The surroundings of Oriolo offer extraordinary natural landscapes within the Pollino National Park, ideal for trekking, excursions, and wildlife observation. Not far away lies the village of Morano Calabro, famous for its medieval historic center and breathtaking views.

Also noteworthy is the Cave of the Nymphs in Papasidero, with spectacular karst formations. For those seeking sea and relaxation, the Ionian coast is within reach, with destinations such as Scalea and Praia a Mare. These places offer a perfect balance of nature, culture, and Calabrian traditions.
