LILT Prevention Initiative Opens at the Former Fish Market Palace in Bari

The historic former Fish Market palace in Piazza Ferrarese, Bari, has opened a programme organized by the Metropolitan City branch of LILT (Italian League for the Fight against Cancer). Part of the National Week for Cancer Prevention, the initiative turns scientific guidance into practical services for the local community.

Goal: encourage primary prevention through information, screenings and hands-on activities for all ages.

Main services and activities

  • Free screenings: rapid Hepatitis C (HCV) tests and guidance on active cancer screening programmes (breast, cervical, colorectal).
  • Specialist consultations: endocrinology, nutrition, gastroenterology and other specialties aimed at early detection.
  • Workshops and demos: extra virgin olive oil tastings, cooking classes and show cooking with chefs and nutritionists.
  • Family and children’s activities: reading labs and educational sessions tailored to younger participants.
  • Wellness and movement: physical activity sessions, laughter yoga and mind-body wellbeing workshops.
  • Blood donation and health services: mobile blood donation unit and on-site support for booking ASL screening appointments.

Participation and organisation

All events are open to the public, free and do not require booking. The programme is carried out with institutional partners, universities, professional orders and local associations, with logistical support from the “Pinerolo” Mechanized Brigade.

The initiative aims to spread awareness of healthy lifestyles and improve access to early diagnostic opportunities, following recommendations from the European Code Against Cancer.

Programme highlights

  • HCV screening by ASL Bari (morning and afternoon sessions).
  • Extra virgin olive oil tasting and sessions on Mediterranean diet and nutrition.
  • Free nutritional and medical consultations.
  • Reading workshops and educational activities for children.
  • Blood donation with AVIS mobile unit on a scheduled day.

Timetables and daily details are available on site: many activities are repeated across the event to ease public participation.
