Oria, the medieval village in the heart of Salento

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 19:50

Among the most beautiful villages of Salento, particularly in the Brindisi area, we find Oria, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.

Originally a Messapian city and later a Roman settlement, Oria has experienced over the centuries various dominations that enriched its architectural and cultural heritage.

What to see in Oria

The historic center of Oria is made up of stone alleys winding uphill to the top of the village, where the Swabian Castle towers above.

The fortress was commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century and has become over the years a symbol of grandeur and majesty. Thanks to its irregular triangular plan, it dominates the surrounding territory.

Because of its imposing structure, the castle offers a panoramic view stretching from the Murge hills to the beaches of Salento.

Another fascinating attraction is the Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, in Baroque style, enriched by a majolica-tiled dome that reflects the sunlight.

Also noteworthy is the ancient Jewish quarter, one of the oldest in Apulia, representing a passage through the eras and cultures that have shaped the village of Oria.

Events, culture, and traditions

Among Oria’s historic events is the Torneo dei Rioni (Tournament of the Districts), a festival that every summer brings the village back to medieval times.

Ladies, knights, costumed courts, and historical competitions alternate, transforming the squares into grand reenactments with a magical atmosphere.

What to see around Oria

The strategic location of the village makes it easy to reach other fascinating destinations in the area.

Nearby are the towns of Grottaglie, Francavilla Fontana, Manduria, and Mesagne, making Oria an excellent base for holidays.

In just a short time, you can also reach the sandy beaches of Campomarino, San Pietro in Bevagna, and Torre Colimena, making it an ideal destination for families with children as well.

Pack your bags and set off for Oria, for a journey rich in history, culinary treasures, and crystal-clear sea.

And don’t forget to mention us in your social media stories!
