Located on the hills of the Bolognese Apennines, just a few kilometers from Imola, Dozza is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
Its medieval houses and the majestic fortress frame walls that have been transformed into true works of art, painted by internationally renowned artists.
What to see in Dozza
The village is not very large, but every corner reveals unexpected details.
The historic center, which opens towards the fortress, is adorned with stone houses and artisan workshops, serving as a canvas for murals with a poetic and figurative character.
These paintings create a bridge between ancient traditions and contemporary art.
At the end of the village stands the Rocca Sforzesca, built in the 13th century and renovated over time.
The fortress houses a museum with an armory, medieval prisons, and panoramic towers.
From above, the view over the Bolognese hills is simply breathtaking.
Moreover, Dozza is a must-visit destination for wine lovers: within the village lies the Regional Wine Cellar of Emilia-Romagna, offering an excellent selection of wines from across the region.
Events, culture, and traditions
You might be lucky enough to visit Dozza during the Biennale of the Painted Wall, an artistic event that, since 1960, has brought artists from all over the world every two years.
During the festival, artists create their works directly on the walls of the houses, turning the village into a true open-air art gallery.
As mentioned earlier, Dozza is also the village of wine: in autumn, during the grape harvest, the town comes alive with events dedicated to Emilian gastronomy, naturally accompanied by excellent local wines.
What to see around Dozza
Dozza’s strategic location makes it easy to explore other fascinating destinations.
Just a few minutes away lies Imola, with its racetrack, fortress, cathedral, and civic museums.
Heading south, you reach the thermal baths of Castel San Pietro, perfect for an afternoon of relaxation.
Nature lovers can venture among the gullies of the Apennines or along the scenic trails of the Vena del Gesso Romagnola Park.
In less than an hour’s drive, you can visit Bologna, Faenza, or Ravenna, making Dozza an excellent base for discovering the whole of Emilia-Romagna.
