Zancati Vecchio: six-point plan to protect finds and enhance Paliano

Autore: Redazione 04/04/2026 03:32

Zancati Vecchio: protection and enhancement become a local priority

The recent formal recognition of the archaeological significance of Zancati Vecchio has triggered a public debate on converting the discoveries into a structured plan that benefits Paliano culturally and economically. To prevent loss or dispersal of the finds, a detailed proposal has been submitted to the competent authorities.

Six priority actions

The proposed plan outlines concrete, sequential measures to ensure conservation, research and public access:

  • Expand investigations: initiate and fund additional excavation campaigns and specialist studies to clarify stratigraphy, dating and the extent of the site.
  • Protect the landscape: review and possibly downscale the 'Paliano 1' photovoltaic project in areas that threaten the archaeological context.
  • Secure funding: pursue regional, national and European financial support for research, conservation and site management.
  • Targeted investments: allocate budget lines specifically for the conservation, documentation and enhancement of the finds and the archaeological area.
  • Return of finds to the town: promote the creation of a local museum hub in Paliano to conserve and display the discoveries locally, improving public access and interpretation.
  • Academic center: establish a dedicated Centre for Archaeological and Historical Studies focused on the Paliano area to support research, training and outreach activities.

Next steps

The plan has been formally forwarded to relevant bodies, requesting immediate expansion of fieldwork and a reassessment of the photovoltaic project's footprint. Moving forward will require funding commitments, technical agreements and a shared timeline among the municipal administration, the cultural heritage authority and academic partners.

Why this matters

An integrated strategy can turn the Zancati Vecchio discoveries into a long-term cultural and tourism asset: beyond scientific preservation, local display and research drive identity, education and sustainable economic opportunities for the area.
