Viterbo: recovered more than 400 artifacts looted from the Tuscia area

On 20 April 2026, a focused operation by the Carabinieri Nucleo Tutela Patrimonio Culturale led to the recovery of over 400 archaeological artifacts that had been illegally removed from clandestine excavations in the Tuscia area of Viterbo province.

Through continuous online auction monitoring and collaboration with customs authorities, law enforcement located the warehouse where the items were stored prior to being shipped abroad. Five individuals have been reported for participation in a criminal group aimed at receiving and illegally exporting cultural property.

  • Recovered items: Etruscan vases, bronze jewelry, terracotta fragments dating to the 4th century BC.
  • Next steps: cataloguing and assessment by the regional Soprintendenza.
  • Planned outcome: exhibit in a local museum to restore the finds to public view and preserve regional history.

The operation highlights the critical role of coordinated monitoring and institutional cooperation in combating the illicit trade of archaeological material. Visitors and researchers interested in archaeological sites in Lazio should watch for official announcements from the Soprintendenza regarding any upcoming displays of the recovered collections.
