History and description
Founded between 58 and 49 BC on the settlement of Iulium Carnicum, it was, over time, first a vicus, then a colony, and finally an episcopal seat. Excavation campaigns, carried out mostly in the present century, have brought to light a vast archaeological area including the Roman forum, the baths, and the remains of the temple. This was later enriched by the Archaeological Museum, which takes its name from the settlement and displays, across three floors, numerous frescoes and works from various cultural periods.
Curiosities
Among the works preserved inside the museum of the park is the floor of the triclinium, a fragmentary mosaic that could only be fully appreciated by guests lying down.
Access
While the archaeological area can be visited free of charge, except for guided tours, the museum is accessible at a cost of €3, with free and reduced admissions available.
How to reach it
Although it can also be reached on foot, it is advisable to arrive at the villa by car, following the signs for Zuglio from Udine along the SS52.
A well-preserved ancient Roman residence, the Villa of Zuglio offers a vivid glimpse into life of the time, allowing its visitors to fully immerse themselves in history!
