Villa Lante – a masterpiece of architecture and water

Autore: Alessia Massa01/10/2025 22:37

History and description

Built in the 16th century at the request of Cardinal Gianfrancesco Gambara, Villa Lante in Bagnaia, near Viterbo, is one of the finest examples of a Mannerist Italian garden. The initial project was entrusted to Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, while the interior fresco decoration and hydraulic design were completed over the years by various artists and architects. The villa is set on a hillside with two elegant twin lodges, the Palazzina Gambara and the Palazzina Montalto, both decorated inside with mythological and religious frescoes. The garden, arranged on several levels, is a true masterpiece of hydraulic engineering. Water, sourced from a natural spring, is channeled through fountains, cascades, ornamental basins, and playful water features. Among the most notable are the Fountain of the Four Moors, the Fountain of the Deluge, the Fountain of the Giants, and the famous water chain flowing down a central stone staircase.

Curiosities

Elected in 2021 as the most beautiful park in Italy and chosen as the set for several films, the villa is also characterized by the presence of numerous coats of arms of Cardinal Gambara, depicting a crayfish, hidden throughout the garden.

Access

Open from Tuesday to Sunday, with hours varying according to the season, the villa can be visited at the cost of €5, with free admission and specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Located in a hamlet of Viterbo, the villa can be reached by car from Viterbo or from Rome, by train via Bagnaia station, or by local bus services.

Villa Lante in Bagnaia is therefore a place where art, architecture, and nature intertwine in a truly enchanting way.
