Vesuvius: more than 2,600 visits to the Crater at Easter

On Easter Sunday the Crater of Vesuvius recorded 2,640 visitors, underlining the site's appeal for both domestic and international tourists. Similar attendance is expected for Easter Monday, consistent with booking trends.

Enhanced services and safety measures

To handle visitor flows and improve onsite services, the Vesuvius National Park authority has implemented several measures:

  • First-aid service: an ambulance will be operational daily from 3 April to 31 October 2026 for immediate assistance.
  • Additional restrooms installed for visitors' convenience.
  • Increased site presence with strengthened security and monitoring activities.

Why these figures matter

Higher visitor numbers during holiday periods highlight renewed interest in Vesuvius and the need for organized access management to ensure safety and a quality visitor experience.

Practical tips for visitors

  • Book ahead where possible to avoid queues and overcrowding.
  • Wear sturdy shoes and layered clothing: weather and conditions can change at elevation.
  • Bring water and sun protection; refreshment options may be limited during peak times.
  • Follow park staff instructions for safety reasons.
  • Consider visiting on weekdays for a quieter experience.

Related note

During the same weekend the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum recorded 3,262 visitors on the Sunday that coincided with the first free "Sunday of the month," also showing strong interest in the Vesuvian archaeological area.
