Good Friday 2026 in Abruzzo: faith, rites and paths of memory

Good Friday, falling on 3 April 2026, represents in Abruzzo a cultural heritage where religious devotion and popular tradition meet. Processions, candles and torches, and liturgical chants transform historic centres into settings of intense communal participation.

  • Chieti: the renowned Procession of the Dead Christ, considered the oldest in Italy, gathers the community at dusk. The procession, accompanied by Saverio Selecchy's Miserere (18th century), moves through medieval streets lit only by torches and candles.
  • Teramo: the Procession of the Desolate begins at dawn, with the veiled Madonna visiting the seven historic churches in a ritual of search and collective memory.
  • Sulmona: notable for the "struscio", a slow swaying step, and for Easter Sunday traditions such as the iconic "running Madonna" ritual.
  • Ortona and Lanciano: towns where morning and evening processions follow one another, offering moments of strong popular participation and striking visual scenes.
  • L'Aquila: the procession, resumed after historical interruptions, features hundreds of participants in traditional costume carrying torches and censers through the historic centre.
  • Vasto and Pescara: Vasto hosts two parallel processions; in Pescara, Good Friday is marked by public ceremonies and an evening Stations of the Cross that involve both locals and visitors.

For visitors, the period is an occasion to discover the cultural identity of Abruzzo's communities through rites that blend the sacred and the folkloric. Respect for places and moments of reflection is advised, and arriving early is recommended to attend the processions along narrow historic streets.
