Valtellina in bloom: eight routes for May

Valtellina offers an extended season of blooms from late March up to the high-altitude rhododendrons. May is the most varied month: valley terraces show cherry and apple trees, while higher areas reveal crocuses, primroses and heather. Below are eight recommended routes to experience spring flowering in the mountains.

Recommended routes

  • Wine Road (Ardenno - Tirano): about 67 km along mezzacosta trails, suitable on foot, by bike or by car. Great for seeing terraced vineyards, orchards and cherry trees.
  • Bondeno Woods (Val Bregaglia / Upper Valchiavenna): easy and family-friendly; paths through woods and pastures with early season blooms and views over Valle Spluga.
  • Andossi Plateau (from Madesimo): reachable on foot or by car, extensive meadows where crocuses peak between late April and early May.
  • Albaredo per San Marco – Rifugio Alpe Piazza (1,835 m): a medium-difficulty route with wide views of the Orobie and flowered pastures up to the refuge.
  • Bagni di Bormio Park (1,350–1,450 m): inside Stelvio National Park, easy trails among heather and wild orchids; ideal for walks mixing nature and historic thermal architecture.
  • Livigno – three itineraries: options for all levels: a flat family-friendly cycle path; the Val Federia Trail (medium) for alpine blooms; Val delle Mine (challenging) for wilder landscapes.
  • Montespluga (Upper Valchiavenna): suited for those reaching elevations near the Swiss border; rhododendrons typically bloom later, into June.
  • Pian di Gembro Nature Reserve (Aprica): a quieter area with a rich understory of primroses, scilla, crocuses and rhododendrons; ideal for those seeking solitude and intact nature.

When to go and practical tips

Timing: flowering season generally runs from late March through June; May is the most versatile month for encountering blooms at different altitudes.

Preparation: pick routes according to altitude and difficulty. Valleys are milder, higher trails may still have snow. Bring water, hiking boots, layered clothing and an offline map or app.

Safety and conservation: stay on marked trails, do not pick wildflowers and observe restrictions in reserves to protect habitats and native species.
