Autore: Redazione 02/10/2025 09:45

History and Description

The Valley of the Temples is one of the most important and spectacular archaeological sites in Sicily and the entire Mediterranean world.

Located near the city of Agrigento, this vast area preserves the ruins of a Greek city founded in the 6th century B.C., known as Akragas, considered one of the largest and wealthiest Greek colonies in the West.

Today, the site features a complex of monumental temples dedicated to various deities, including Zeus, Hera, Heracles, and Concordia.

The valley stands out for the architectural quality and remarkable preservation of its buildings, particularly the Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved examples of Doric architecture.

It also includes the Acropolis, city walls, necropolises, and several religious structures, all set within a breathtaking natural landscape.

In addition to its historical and artistic significance, the archaeological park is also a site of great scenic and environmental value, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

Curiosities

Among the most fascinating facts about the site is that the Temple of Concordia, built in the 5th century B.C., is so well preserved because it was converted into a Christian church in the 6th century, one of the main reasons for its excellent state of conservation.

Moreover, throughout the year, the Valley of the Temples hosts numerous cultural events and open-air concerts, attracting visitors from all over the world.

Access, Costs, and Hours

The Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Temples is open daily, with hours varying by season, and can be visited for €12, with free entry and specific reductions available.

How to Get There

The Valley of the Temples is located about 3 kilometers from the center of Agrigento and is easily reachable:

  • By car, via the SS115;
  • By bus, with several regular lines;
  • By train, from the Agrigento railway station.

Visiting the Valley of the Temples means immersing yourself in ancient history, admiring the architecture and culture of one of the greatest civilizations of the Mediterranean, all within a natural setting of extraordinary beauty.
