Apitourism is emerging as a notable segment of experiential travel in Italy: recent data indicate that 7 out of 10 tourists are attracted to stays linked to beekeeping, honey tastings and exploration of rural ecosystems. With roughly 2 million hives and more than 60 honey varieties, Italy is positioning itself as a destination for nature-immersive holidays.
Researchers from Università Niccolò Cusano and international partners published "Beekeeping and Tourism: A Dual-Conditions Framework for Regenerative Tourism," showing that beekeeping-related tourism can deliver concrete benefits for the environment, local communities and visitors when designed with regenerative goals.
Context and support measures: the EU is the world’s second-largest producer, contributing about one fifth of global output. In Italy, regions like Piedmont (over 3,000 tonnes annually) and Calabria (around 2,000 tonnes) stand out. Funding-wise, the EU allocated more than €5 million and the Italian government about €12 million to projects linking apiculture and tourism.
The study defines three cumulative conditions for apitourism to be truly regenerative:
Typical offerings include guided apiary visits, educational workshops, guided tastings, sensory trails and immersive nature experiences. Initiatives such as LIFE BEEadapt report measurable outputs—over 70 bee hotels installed and more than 6,000 plants established in pilot areas.
Researchers advise travellers and operators to use simple, measurable indicators (drawing from frameworks like ETIS or GSTC): how much spending remains local, how many micro-businesses participate, jobs created, school and association engagement, and observable ecological interventions tied to the tourism activity.
In short, apitourism in Italy can be more than a honey-themed getaway: if implemented with clear regenerative criteria, it becomes a tool for environmental restoration and sustainable local growth.
